Local Attractions

The vast majority of visitors to the Brecon Beacons National Park, arrive by private vehicle, with 'scenery and landscape' being the most often quoted reason for visiting. Not surprisingly, 'sightseeing by car' is the most popular activity for visitors and of the more active pursuits, walking is the most popular, but cycling, caving, water-sports, trekking and fishing are also widely enjoyed.

In recent years, hang-gliding, parasending and mountain biking have increased in popularity. The rich natural and built heritage of the National Park is also a source of pleasure for the many visitors who enjoy bird-watching/painting, photography, visiting archaeological and historical sites and shopping.


Brecon Beacons

National Park Visitor Centre, Libanus located 5 miles south-west of Brecon, off the A470 Merthyr Tydfil to Brecon road. Information, displays and publications about the National Park, with an award winning restaurant and spectacular views of the Central Beacons.

Pen y Fan Owned and managed by the National Trust - 7 miles south of Brecon, at 886 metres, the highest peak in the National Park. The popular walk up from Pont ar Daf on the A470 involves an ascent of 450 metres (almost 1500 feet)
The weather can change very quickly, so be prepared!


Carreg Cennen Castle

Carreg Cennen Castle Nr llandeilo - 18 miles south-west of Llandovery, 3 miles south-east of Llandeilo off the A40 or A483.

Perched on a 100 metre cliff with stunning views, the current ruin dates from the late 13th century, although Prehistoric and Roman remains have been found on the site.

National Showcaves Centre of Wales

Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves - On the A4067 Sennybridge to Swansea road, 10 miles away.

First discovered in 1912, and opened to the public in 1939, there are now 3 Show Caves, a Dinosaur Park, replica Iron-Age Village, Shire Horse centre and Stone Circles to explore.


Monmouth to Brecon Canal

Just 8 miles away in brecon Canal walk & boat trips. The canal runs for almost all its route within the Brecon Beacons National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty covering over 500 square miles.
For much of its 35 miles it follows the tree lined course of the River Usk, often seeming to hang on the hillsides above it. Abergavenny and Brecon are both bustling market towns with plenty of interesting things to see and do, especially on market days! Crickhowell is an interesting country town and there are numerous other villages to explore.

However the canal is essentially a rural waterway and you'll probably see more wildlife than people along its route; swans, kingfishers, herons and buzzards are common and the canal is well stocked with fish.

Llangorse Lake

Llangorse Lake and Common - 8 miles east of Brecon off the A40 Abergavenny to Brecon road.

The largest natural lake in South Wales, well-known for fishing, sailing, windsurfing and a haven for wildlife, particularly birds. There is also an iron-Age inspired Visitor Centre.


Brecon Mountain Railway

Merthyr Tydfil - Brecon Railway - We are located just off the Heads of the Valleys trunk road - about 3 miles north of Merthyr Tydfil. Follow the Mountain Railway signs from the A470 and A465 and you arrive in our large free car and coach park.

Travel in one of our all-weather observation coaches behind a vintage steam locomotive through beautiful scenery into the Brecon Beacons National Park along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir to Dol-y-Gaer on one of the most popular railways in Wales.


Craig y nos Country Park

Craig-y-nos Country Park and Visitor Centre - On the A 4067 Swansea to Sennybridge road, 10 miles.

Information and displays about the industrial and social history of the area, and the important geology of the nearby Cribarth mountain. Easy walking around the extensive grounds.


Canoe Hire Wales

Black mountain hires canoes and sit-on kayaks for half day, full day and up to 7 days, half day canoe hire is from Glasbury to Hay which is 5 miles and takes around 2.5 hours, a full day if to Whitney on Wye a total distance of 10 miles, stopping at Hay for Lunch.

Our canoe hire is available from April until the end of September, subject to river levels.
